Oily Hair Hacks

where to apply dry shampoo

Whether you woke up late or just didn’t feel like washing your hair, we’ve all had to deal with oily hair at one time or another. While some of us were blessed with great hair, that only needs to be washed a few times a week, others face the oily hair problem daily. Here are our favorite tips and and products to fight your oily hair!

Dry Shampoo

First and foremost, when trying to combat oily hair, you need a great dry shampoo. There are tons of different types of dry shampoo. You could choose from powder or a spray; volumizing or color. We usually recommend to try a few to find the one that works best with your hair type. We recommend parting your hair three to four times working down your head on both sides, and spraying at the root (or applying powder, if that’s the dry shampoo you chose). Allow your dry shampoo to set for about 3 minutes before you begin styling or brushing your hair. Don’t forget to spray your crown!

Curls

If you are trying to combat oily hair, plan ahead! Style your hair with curls versus straightening it. By curling your hair, you are creating volume at the root and keeping your hair off your scalp. Straight hair tends to come into more contact with scalp oil. Don’t have time to curl your hair with a curling iron every morning? Try setting it with curlers or rollers.

Clarify

Most people get frightened by the word “clarify”. Don’t panic! Everyone should use a clarifying shampoo either weekly or biweekly. You get natural build up from your styling products, scalp oils, and the environment. Just using your daily shampoo may not be enough to fully rid your scalp of those grease causing culprits! Here is a list of some of our favorite clarifying shampoos:

L’anza Clarifying Shampoo

Matrix Normalizing Clean Reset

Rinse Properly

I know, it sounds silly, but rinsing properly can cut greasy days in half. If your hair is not rinsed properly, you are leaving behind residue, which can cause your hair to look dirty. Make sure to always apply shampoos at the roots and conditioner only from the earlobes down. Give a good rinse, especially the crown of your head, and be sure to use lukewarm water. Hot water can cause your scalp to produce more oils.
